EYHA Offers U10 Girls

10/14/07

By Pat Burke, ACE Director

EYHA offers Vermont's first U10 girls developmental team

EYHA U10 Team

Goals and Rationale: This program allows for a cohort of U10 girls to access single gender hockey at EYHA. Enacting this plan will serve as a launching pad for U10 girls hockey throughout Vermont.
EYHA had intended to operate full season teams at the U12 and U14 level. After try-outs it was determined that the U14 team was facing player personnel issues and would need a number of U12 eligible girls to remain viable.

The U12 team also faces number issues; however, EYHA recruiting efforts have yielded a number of beginner level players who fall in the U10 age range. This program helped to keep the U14 team alive and provides opportunity for U12 girls to practice and play as a normal travel team and creates a U10 modified travel program for younger girls who may be new to hockey and only interested in playing single gender hockey.

Details: The U10 team will have two practices per week with one game per week on a weekend day. The team consists of some of the U10 girls who expressed an interest in travel hockey and some X-ice mite & new U10 players. The team will consist of 10-15 players and play selected games versus Vermont opponents including some house and cross ice games vs. co-ed mite teams. The team may participate in a girls’ tournament as a Tier II (or B) U10 team. The overall profile for the team will have a practice to game ratio as close as possible to USA Hockey’s recommendation.

Roster: Currently there are 11 girls on the U10 team. There is room for interested friends and neighbors to join the program….please help us grow girls hockey in EYHA!

Ice: The organization was able to absorb this team without purchasing additional ice time. The two primary sources for ice are the planned U12/14 weeknight practice slot (with all girls skating together one night per week) and the Squirt house weekend ice time.

Post-season: The U10 team will not participate in a post season state tournament. Since the team will not be “tournament bound”, there exists flexibility about age (an 11 year old who is a novice level player could participate) and schedule (the aforementioned mite game possibility).

Coaching: Larry Hagerty is an experienced youth hockey coach. He is the Head Coach and has recruited assistant coaches to help on the ice. The girls program has seized the opportunity to “unify” across all levels and the coaching staffs for each level (U10, U12 and U14) are committed to a collaborative developmental environment.

Communication: The EYHA web site is the primary vehicle for communication. Make it your homepage today!
